 Cholmondeley Castle. SY14 8AH. Tel: 01829 720383. Probably the most romantic gardens in Cheshire and only 7 miles away. Plantings are planned to give a lovely mix of colour and varieties of height throuout the year. The gardens comprise a temple garden, a rose garden, a variety of mixed borders and an intriguing walk around the lake. The castle is still home to the Cholmondeley family and the gardens are only open on Sunday and other specified times, check their web site.

ERDDIG GARDENS & PARKLAND

ERDDIG GARDENS & PARKLAND

Erddig Wrexham LL13 0YT. This Grade 1 walled garden has been lovingly restored to its 18th century design. There are water features, a Victorian parterre (pictured), herbaceous borders, pleated Limes, and fruit trees trained against the walls. It's also home to the national ivy collection. There is extensive parkland laid out by William Emes with an unusual water cascade known as the Cup & Saucer. Erddig garden is a very special place.

CHIRK CASTLE GARDENS

Chirk Castle, Chirk, LL14 5AF. The garden was started in 1653, underwent extensive remodelling in1764 and topiary hedges and wrought iron gates were added the 19th century. Norah Linslay, a renowned gardener added a magnificent herbaceous border in the early part of the 20th century. The gardens comprise,The Long Border, Hawk House, Laundry, Rose Garden, Ha Ha, Shrub Garden, Kitchen Garden and pleasure woodland Garden.

ARLEY HALL GARDENS

Arley Hall, Arley, Northwich  CW9 6NA This much cherished family home, since the 15th century, has one of the finest gardens in England. They are outstanding for their historic interest, variety and magnificent double herbaceous boarder. It's a Cheshire garden of distinction and well worth a visit. The house is not open to the public. The gardens are sometimes closed for filming, so do check when they are open on their web site.

WOLLERTON OLD HALL GARDENS

WOLLERTON OLD HALL GARDENS

Wollerton Old Hall, Wollerton, Market Drayton, TF9 4NA. This is a world class garden that is sure to fill you with inspiration and with garden design ideas. It's extensive without being huge, and contains, the old garden, the rill garden, yew walk, Alice's Garden, rose & sundial garden, long walk, Lime alee, croft garden, herbaceous border, well garden, front garden, shade garden, orchard garden and much more. The house is not open to the public.

HODNET HALL GARDENS

HODNET HALL GARDENS

Hodnet Hall, Hodnet, Market Drayton, TF9 3NN. This is an extensive informal garden of some distinction. The garden contains the remains of a Norman castle and what remains of a Tudor Manor House. A Historic House Association Christie's Garden Of The Year. The garden is open from April to September but only on Sunday and some Bank Holiday Mondays. Check their web site for current open dates and times. This is a private home and the Hall is not normally open to the public. However check with the Historic House web site, you may find it opens its doors once or twice a year.
